Oxygen gas is often combined with a fuel gas for welding, cutting, brazing and soldering. Used to raise the temperature to higher levels than if a fuel was used alone (with air), this, as a result, supports combustion. When used for cutting a 1% reduction increases oxygen consumption and cutting speed by 25%. Oxygen can be used in a shielding gas mixture due to its ability to hold the arc in shape and reduce surface tension.
